How to Prepare an Electronic Press Kit (EPK)

In today's digital age, an electronic press kit (EPK) has become an indispensable tool for musicians from any genre seeking to book gigs at all levels. An EPK serves as a concise and engaging package that provides journalists, talent buyers, and promoters with essential information about you or your band. Inspired by my long-time friend (and talent buyer / promoter) Ryan Chavers, we will explore the key elements and best practices to create an impressive electronic press kit that captures attention and helps you put forth a more professional first impression while trying to get your act booked.

  • Key Components of an EPK:

    a. Biography/About Section: Provide a brief overview of yourself or your band. You don’t need to write your entire life story. Highlight your career achievements and accolades including larger acts you’ve opened for and festivals you’ve played. Keep it concise as most talent buyers / promoters are going through tons of these and don’t want to read about your uncle who gave you a keyboard when you were twelve.

b. High-Quality Media Assets: Include a couple high-resolution images, professional photographs, logos, and artwork that visually represent you or your band. Also, incorporate audio and video clips that showcase your talent, such as music samples, music videos and footage of live performances. Ensure all media assets are easily downloadable for the convenience of journalists or organizers.

c. Press Releases and Reviews: Include notable press releases and positive reviews that validate your work as a musician. These endorsements add credibility and can greatly influence decision-makers when considering bookings.

d. Contact Information: Provide clear and updated contact details, including your name or band name, email address, phone number, website, and social media handles. Make it easy for interested parties to reach out and connect with you for potential opportunities.

e. Combine all of the above into a downloadable PDF document. It is my experience that the best way to put together your electronic press kit is as a downloadable PDF document including your biography and images with clickable links to all of your music, videos, social media, website etc.

Crafting an effective electronic press kit is an essential step in promoting yourself or your band. By understanding your target audience, including key components, paying attention to visual design, and maintaining concise and engaging content, you can create an EPK that grabs attention, impresses talent buyers and promoters, and opens doors to new opportunities. Remember to keep your EPK updated and regularly evaluate its impact to ensure it remains a powerful promotional tool in your arsenal.

  • Warning! Do not randomly message promoters and talent buyers that you don’t personally know on their social media pages. It’s annoying and nine times out of ten will most likely be ignored. Most venues have booking information with the proper channels for communication on their websites and social media pages. Follow their preferred method of communicating.
